Terry Group Case Study
Terry Melody 2 - Bowling Club, Leigh
Project Description
Leigh Bowling Club's building could only be accessed by a number of steps and to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act the club needed to make alternative access arrangements for its less physically able members. The lift travel height of 1600mm meant that a ramp would not be a practical option. However, the landing not only provided access to the main entrance but also the route for the emergency exit door.
Challenges
- Restricted landing area
- Location of fire exit
- Change of key operation
Solution
Following a joint site survey with third party allied Lifts, Terry Lifts recommended the Melody 2 platform lift as the most appropriate solution for the circumstances. The best site for the lift was opposite the emergency exit, so the landing had to be extended to allow for use of the lift at the time as the emergency exit. The extending landing also allowed sufficient room for a wheelchair's turning circle. The Melody 2 was initially fitted with 'key inhibit', meaning that each station required key operation for every use, however, once the club began to use the lift it decided that this was not necessary. Terry Lifts was able to change the Melody 2 to 'Key isolate' for the convenience of club members, so that the lift only required one key and could be left live all day with no need for supervision.
Advantages at a glance
- Direct route from emergency exit to lift
- Creation of sufficient space to maneuver
- Convenience of 'Key isolate' function
Client Feedback
Leigh Bowling Club comments that although it does not have many disabled members, those it does have find it a joy to be able to access the building so easily. The Melody 2 is simple to operate with just one key and the club foresees that its use will increase as more prospective members hear about it.
