Terry Melody 2 - Fit City, Worsley, Salford
Project Description
A major £3.6 million program of refurbishment at Leisure facility Fit City in Worsley, Salford, included a new and enlarged car park and a new reception and entrance area, as well as the complete renovation and redecoration of its three swimming pools. New changing and showering facilities, a new sauna suite and a brand new fully re-equipped fitness suite are complemented by a new aerobics / dance studio. As part of the refurbishment scheme, to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act disabled access was needed from the mezzanine floor behind the renovated reception area to the fitness suite on the lower floor.

Solution
Main contractor Cruden Construction Limited asked Terry Lifts to supply a Melody 2 platform lift for the 1710mm drop to the lower floor. Terry Lifts advised that the upper level floor should be strengthened to ensure that it was structurally strong enough to support the Melody 2. The tiles specified for the floor area around the lift had a greater thickness than normal, so Terry Lifts manufactured a special metal plate to pack the lift up to achieve the required level for a neat finish. Aside from the necessary strengthening work to the mezzanine floor, the installation was straightforward with the tiling being completed after the lift was in place. The client had requested a single key point located on the lower level rather than an upper-level key point generally specified for public access, which Terry Lifts was able to accommodate.
