Terry Lifts’ standards on User Safety exceed official requirements – and competitor standards too!

For Terry Lifts, user safety has always been a priority in its wheelchair lift designs. This goes beyond British Standards for minimum lift specifications and is based on rigorous risk assessments.

Terry Lifts take the view that user safety in a public access environment should not be compromised to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing design or to reduce costs. A practical example of this focus on user safety can be seen in the company’s Melody 1 low rise platform lift.

Although there is no official or legislative requirement to incorporate a carriage gate in the design, Terry Lifts feel that competitors who opt for the alternative of a cost-saving arrestor ramp are potentially putting ambulant lift users at risk. It is conceivable that an ambulant user could fall from the lift causing serious injury where there is no gate protection on the carriage. With the Melody 1 platform lift, an 1100mm carriage gate comes as standard, together with 1100mm side and upper level gate protection.

John McSweeney, Sales and Marketing Director at Terry Lifts, is clear that the minimum technical requirements accepted across the lift industry fall short in this specific – but all-important – instance:

“Customer safety is always our first concern,” says John. “With every lift we design and manufacture, we look in great detail at ways to maximise safety.

“For people who are already vulnerable, we want to make sure that our products deliver nothing less than total peace of mind.”
