What is the difference between a Domestic Lift and a Public Access Lift?

Posted: 1st July 2014

The difference between a Domestic Lift and a Public Access Lift is simple. Domestic Lifts are for private use only in single occupancy dwellings/houses. These are the types of lifts you would find in your home. Public Access Lifts are lifts which can be found in public places. Some of our lifts do have a duel use and can fit in nicely in both environments; however, this is not always the case.

The main reason we differentiate the two types of lifts is that not all lifts can be used in the same setting. For example, we get a lot of queries regarding our Harmony through floor lift which business users often enquire about for their place of work. Unfortunately, due to building regulations of public access buildings, our domestic lift just would not be suitable and would not comply with the relevant British or European standard. As a UK manufacturer, we are very proud of the fact that all our Public Access lifts comply fully with Part M of the Building Regulations and also meets the requirements of the Equality Act (formerly the DDA)..

The safety of our customers is paramount to us here at Terry Lifts, therefore we have a comprehensive own range of fully compliant lifts which we can offer as a solution for public access.

Although some of our Domestic Lifts may not be suitable for public access buildings, we are proud to say all domestic lifts, such as our Lifestyle Lift and Harmony Lift come fully fitted with a 30 minute fire protection between floors. Our Domestic Lifts are also fitted with pressure sensitive safety surfaces that stop the lift, if obstructed from above and below, where applicable.
These are just a few factors which makes Terry Lifts a popular choice. We are committed to providing you with lifts of the highest quality. Your safety is our main concern, with over 40 years of experience within the lift industry you can be assured you will receive excellent customer service, support and ultimately, a high quality product to last you a lifetime.
