We are proud to have donated a Melody 1 Platform Lift to Blackpool Carers Centre, Beaverbrooks House as part of a BBC One special episode ‘DIY SOS: for Children in Need’. The episode airs on BBC One on the 17th of November at 8:00 PM.
The DIY SOS team took on the ambitious objective of restoring the dilapidated Beaverbrooks House in order for it to be used by young carers. The project brought together tradespeople and volunteers from across the nation to help make the house a safe and comfortable environment for the young carers and staff.
Accessibility was one of the many challenges of the project. Many of the carers’ family members have disabilities, and a member of the centre’s staff uses a wheelchair. They needed to be provided with easy access to the house, which has a raised exterior outside the front door.
A ramp was not deemed a suitable solution due to the length required for the recommended gradient. A platform lift such as Terry Lifts’ Melody 1 would provide a smarter and more aesthetically pleasing solution for the period building.
Our last DIY SOS Big Build project took place in 2014, when a through floor lift was installed for a family with a disabled son. After learning about the restoration of the Beaverbrooks House, we offered to donate a Melody 1 platform lift to the Centre.
A very limited time window presented difficulties as we could not manufacture a new platform lift unit in time for the installation date. However, a unit located in our showroom in Knutsford was identified as suitable for being allocated for the Beaverbrooks House project.
After the lift was dismantled and transported, our skilled engineers installed it in less than a day. Now the lift is providing visitors and staff with safe, reliable and easy access to the wonderful new facilities. Terry Lifts are proud to have taken part in making a difference to young carers’ everyday lives.
