Restoring a Lift, Preserving a Home

The Challenge

We were contacted by our long-standing sub-contractor, Keith Lawmon of Rise Lifts, about a Harmony Phase 1 lift installed back in 2003. After 22 years of reliable service, a fracture to the carriage floor meant the lift had to be taken out of use.

With this model phased out of production in 2010, the initial thought was a full replacement. But on visiting the property, it became clear this wasn’t a simple option. Low ceiling heights at both landings ruled out installing the Phase 2 version without extensive building work – something that would have caused major upheaval for the customer.

The lift itself had been originally manufactured as a one-off to fit this unique home, so the challenge was clear: how could we keep the customer moving freely around their home without disruption?

Finding a Way Forward

Rather than walk away, our Technical Director, Steve Bell, was determined to find a solution. His plan was to refurbish the existing lift in situ, making use of our expertise, stock of parts and the support of our production teams.

A Phase 1 floor was sourced from a recently removed lift and returned to our factory, where it was stripped down, repainted and carpeted. Our teams also supplied additional replacement parts, ensuring everything was ready for a full refurbishment.

The Refurbishment

On-site, the lift underwent a comprehensive update. This included:

  • Replacement trailing and door safety cables
  • Updated PCB’s
  • New safety-critical switches
  • Replacement underpan springs
  • An oil flush and change
  • A complete service

Steve Bell carried out the work himself, supported by Installation Apprentice, Sam Bell. Remarkably, the entire refurbishment was completed in just one working day.

The Result

The customer was delighted. With minimal disruption, their much-loved home remained fully accessible – just as it had been for the past two decades.

This project highlights the longevity of our lifts and the passion of our people. It also shows our commitment to going the extra mile for customers, ensuring they can continue to live safely and independently in the homes they love.
