How we’re adapting homes to support an aging population.

Posted: 8th April 2026

As we live longer and healthier lives, the choice to stay in our own homes rather than moving to assisted living or a care facility has become a social norm.

In the UK alone, the number of over 65s is set to rise sharply over the next decade, with people today more likely to be active and independent than in previous generations.

This growing desire for autonomy is changing how we think about housing, care, and the purpose of the home itself. Maintaining our quality of life calls for a safe, comfortable and adaptable home, together with smart home technologies, community support services and social connection.

It isn’t a short-term trend. It’s a long-term plan.

We’re seeing a shift from reactive modifications to more proactive home design that anticipates the evolving needs of residents.

With strong growth in lift products that enable independent living, healthcare professionals increasingly recommend structural adaptations, not only for safety but for mental and emotional well-being.

Aging in place means redesigning physical spaces, technology, and care services to support changing capabilities. To budget for accessibility costs, it pays to talk openly with family about future needs and have a home safety assessment early. Aging in place is about choice and preparation. And when done thoughtfully, it lets us grow old on our own terms.

Home lifts are now part of the furniture.

Once taken for granted, stairs can quickly become barriers to daily life. Today’s home lifts are a mainstream strategy for responsible planning. They require minimal space, have quiet operation, and meet stringent safety standards, transforming old age with a new lease of life and sense of fulfilment.

Involved in the home lift industry from the very start, we continue to set the benchmark at Terry Lifts, with high quality products proudly designed and manufactured in Britain. Almost half of UK adults develop mobility issues in later life. So, choosing to adapt the way we live sooner gives us the peace of mind to enjoy our homes well into the future.

If you’re an architect or builder looking for early design input on a project, share your plans with the team you can trust.
