Meet the team: Our Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Posted: 22nd January 2025

From Sketches to Life-Changing Solutions: Meet Our Lead Mechanical Design Engineer Max Capel who is one of the people behind the trusted designs of Terry Lifts’ products.

What is your job title and how long have you been at Terry Lifts?
My Job title is Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, and I have been here almost 3 years now.

Terry Lifts is all about being “the one to trust” How does that value shine through in your role?
My job revolves around producing products that are trusted by all parties. That includes end users as well as our agents, installers, and maintenance staff. The team and I are very aware that people trust us to make the correct design choices to ensure safety and ease of use in a broad range of challenges. We also know that sometimes things won’t go to plan, and in that situation, we are relied upon to ensure a swift and thought-out resolution to minimise any impact on those who use our lifts every day.

Tell us something unique about the Terry Lifts team culture?
Terry Lifts is a company with a long history of innovation, starting with Mr Terry himself. The culture specifically within the design department, is to use innovation in any way we can to improve the user experience without compromising safety. We also believe that good ideas can come from anywhere, so we strive to consider all suggestions to improve our lifts, whether that comes from inside the company or externally.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your role at Terry Lifts?
It’s been very rewarding to see a few sketches in a notebook progress through to a model on a computer screen, to a proto-type in our R&D facility, and finally to a fully functioning lift in someone’s property that will make a real difference to their lives.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing – any hobbies or interests?
I am also a long-suffering Spurs fan, so I make the effort to watch all the games I can, for better or worse (normally worse currently). But mostly I am the quintessential engineer, so I spend my spare time doing DIY and fixing things. Much to the inconvenience of my wife, I am great at temporarily turning our house upside down to achieve it!

Keep an eye out for more team introductions from Terry Lifts!
