At Terry Lifts, we are driven by a simple but powerful mission: to create solutions that provide independence, accessibility, and dignity for those facing mobility challenges. But our commitment goes beyond our products—we believe in supporting our people and our community through every challenge life brings.
For our colleague James, mobility has always been a defining part of his life. As an ex-paratrooper, he thrived on movement, challenge, and adventure. However, three years ago, James sustained an injury that affected his mobility, so he thought, and in June 2024, he received a devastating diagnosis—Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Initially, the symptoms began in his legs, but the disease has since progressed, making everyday activities increasingly difficult. Understanding these challenges first hand, Terry Lifts took immediate steps to support James at work, adjusting his workstation and car parking space to ensure he remained as comfortable and independent as possible.
Before James’ diagnosis, he and his colleague Lee had discussed doing a skydive together—something James had done in the past but would now no longer be able to do. Following the diagnosis, Lee suggested keeping their promise but turning it into a fundraiser for MND.
When James found out that Lee was going ahead with the skydive in his honour, he was overwhelmed with emotion. Knowing that his friend was willing to take on this challenge to raise money for MND research and support meant the world to him.
“The fact that Lee is doing this for MND makes it even more special. It’s not just about the jump—it’s about giving back to those who have helped me and so many others.” – James
For Lee, this is a deeply personal challenge. He has never done a skydive before, nor has he ever raised money for charity. But this isn’t just about ticking something off a bucket list—it’s about making a difference.
“I’ve always wanted to join the army, but my dad wouldn’t allow it. I ended up in engineering instead. Doing this skydive is a way for me to experience something I’ve always wanted to do while giving back to an incredible cause.” – Lee
The MND Association has already provided James with essential support, from simple things like specialist socks to more life-changing equipment like a lift-and-tilt chair. Lee hopes that by raising money, he can help ensure that others living with MND continue to receive the same invaluable support.
The Terry Lifts team has come together to help Lee promote the fundraiser, creating posters to spread awareness. In addition, Lee’s mother-in-law has started crocheting ‘Terry Bears’, which people can buy to help raise extra funds.
“We were blown away by Lee’s dedication. It’s inspiring to see colleagues go above and beyond to support each other.” – Helen Reeves, Colleague
And it’s not just about the skydive—Terry Lifts continues to support James in every way possible.
“At Terry Lifts, we don’t just design products that change lives—we care deeply about the people who use them and the people we work with. That’s why we’ve made workplace adjustments for James to ensure he continues to feel comfortable and supported.” – Tim Barrow, Operations Director
As a company that provides home lifts, platform lifts, and step lifts to improve accessibility and independence, we understand the real-life impact of mobility challenges. Every day, we work to give people freedom within their homes, and we’re proud to extend that mission beyond our products.
“Our work at Terry Lifts is about more than just lifts—it’s about giving people the ability to live life on their terms. Supporting Lee and James is a reflection of our core values.” – Dave Allen, Managing Director
As the big jump approaches, Lee is preparing mentally and physically for the challenge ahead along with fellow colleague Nigel.
“It’s been tough seeing what James is going through. No one expects something like this to hit so close to home. What Lee’s doing is a powerful gesture—it’s not easy to step up like that, but it shows how much we all care. It’s been emotional for the team, but we’re behind them both.” – Tony Birkin, Production Manager
The support has been incredible so far, but there’s still time to donate and get involved. Every contribution, big or small, will help support those living with MND and fund research for a cure.
