Making British Heritage More Accessible

Posted: 3rd July 2025

We were recently honoured to support greater accessibility at a landmark location tied to one of Britain’s most celebrated literary families. Our team installed an S7 SR Wheelchair Stairlift at The Brontë Birthplace in Thornton, Bradford, enhancing access for visitors and helping ensure that everyone can experience this culturally significant site.

About the S7 SR Wheelchair Stairlift

The S7 SR is a compact, easy-to-use inclined platform stairlift designed to improve wheelchair access on straight staircases – ideal for both public spaces and domestic lift installations.

As part of our range of inclusive mobility solutions, the S7 SR offers:

  • A foldable platform to maximise stairway clearance
  • An integrated handrail for seated passengers
  • Constant pressure controls, usable by the individual or an attendant
  • Key-controlled operation for added security
  • Power-folding platform, ramps, and arms
  • Joystick control for smooth and easy operation

This wheelchair platform lift reflects our dedication to safety, reliability, and thoughtful design – hallmarks of every Terry Lifts product.

About The Brontë Birthplace

Located in Thornton, Bradford, The Brontë Birthplace is where the Brontë children were born. Managed by a team of volunteers and local supporters, the house has been carefully restored and now serves as a cultural hub.

Through exhibitions, tours, workshops and events, it celebrates the Brontë legacy and aims to inspire future generations to “Be More Brontë” with creativity, resilience, and imagination.

A Brief History of the House

  • 1815 – Patrick, Maria and their two eldest daughters moved into the house, once known as the Parsonage
  • 1820 – The family relocated to Haworth, marking the beginning of the house’s long historical journey
  • 1898 – A shop extension was built and later became R. Lovette Butcher’s shop in the 1960s
  • Late 1990s – Author Barbara Whitehead restored the house and opened it as a museum
  • 2014 – Emily’s Coffee Shop opened, run by Mark De Luca
